Welcome

Are you searching for something more in life? Would you like to finally understand how much food to eat, which foods to eat or how much exercise to do? Perhaps you're intrigued to learn more about how screen time impacts your lifestyle choices and mental health? Or maybe you arrived here by mistake, either way I hope you can find some value in my content.

About

I have spent most of my life obsessed with sports and human performance. From a young age, I always tried to improve at kicking a ball, perfecting my batting technique or running faster. Sadly, my ability only took me so far, and I was not good enough to make a career out of playing sports. After finishing my degree in Politics and Philosophy, I focused on helping others get fitter, stronger and leaner.

I studied strength and conditioning, nutrition and behaviour change. Building training plans, reshaping eating habits and asking 'why' are three tools I have always used.

However, as the years passed, I became fascinated by how all aspects of our world impact the physical self. How we think, the things we surround ourselves with and the people we meet are just three examples of this.

Away from my professional career, I am a competitive CrossFit athlete (all be it an ageing one!) and the proud father of two little ones whom I raise with my partner Kat, a registered Women's Health Physio and business owner of Hatch Athletic.

Together we are trying to use our combined health knowledge to raise two happy, resilient and curious little humans. Not that we manage it every day. I mean, we are human, after all...

Deep Health

Deep health involves thriving in all dimensions of human experience.

No single aspect of our health functions alone.

Our physical, mental and emotional health interacts with our social setting and environment, as well as our sense of purpose in life.

Purpose

This space exists to share my thoughts on all things health. As a wellness coach, I spend my days working with people and examining new trends or bodies of research, and I want to make the best of it available for anyone who shares my curiosity.

Some time ago, I became increasingly aware of the complexity of human beings and how unique we are as a species - years of program writing and diet prescription for people wanting to chase goals often ignored humans' mental, social and environmental needs. Deep Health is a phrase I learned about during a time of curiosity and learning for me, and it has led me to where I am today. As I grappled with the identity challenge of becoming a Father, I stopped to ask who I am and what do I want (something I recommend to everyone). You might ask, what on earth does this have to do with fitness, diet and health in general? Everything, as it turns out.

I wanted to learn more about human behaviour and what makes us tick. For example, although millions would disagree, weight loss is more complex than calories in vs calories out. What about the social situation of a human? How might that impact their food choices? Their environment, too and what their home is like. How much time do they spend on a screen, social media, emails, sleep...the list goes on.

This website is my first attempt to use my knowledge to empower others to ask those questions from a health-first perspective. Most of my opinions come from a place of sports, fitness and nutrition (my three main knowledge bases), so apologies in advance. However, you won't need a regimented fitness plan to follow any of the messages!
